10 Common Ingredients To Avoid For Toxic-Free Skincare

In the pursuit of healthier lifestyles, there's a growing movement towards embracing natural and organic products, especially when it comes to skincare. With mounting concerns about the long-term effects of toxic chemicals on both our bodies and the environment, the shift towards toxic-free skincare is more than just a trend—it's a conscious choice towards safer, greener alternatives.

At Island Goddess Organics, we believe that everyone should have access to skin care that they can rely on and trust 100% without the hidden nasties that so many high end brands put into their 'natural' ranges.

Understanding Natural Skincare:

Natural skincare products are derived from botanical sources such as plants, herbs, fruits, and nuts. These products typically avoid synthetic chemicals, artificial fragrances, and harsh preservatives commonly found in conventional skincare formulas. Instead, they harness the power of nature to cleanse, nourish, and protect the skin. By opting for natural formulations, you can avoid exposing your skin and body to potentially harmful toxins while also minimising your environmental footprint.

The Dangers of Toxic Ingredients:

Conventional skincare products often contain a plethora of synthetic chemicals, fragrances, and preservatives that can pose potential risks to our health. These toxic ingredients, such as parabens, phthalates, sulfates, and formaldehyde, have been linked to various health concerns ranging from skin irritation and allergies to more serious issues like hormone disruption and even cancer. Moreover, many of these chemicals can accumulate in the environment, leading to pollution and harm to wildlife.

While synthetic skincare products may offer quick fixes or temporary results, safe natural skincare prioritises long-term holistic approaches to skin health. By nourishing the skin with wholesome ingredients, natural skincare helps bolster the skin's natural barrier function, enhancing its resilience against environmental stressors and premature aging. Consistent use of natural skincare can lead to lasting improvements in skin texture, tone, and overall appearance.

Key Ingredients to Avoid:

When choosing toxic-free skincare products, it's essential to steer clear of certain harmful ingredients commonly found in conventional formulations. Island Goddess Organics formulations will never include any of the following known toxic ingredients:

  1. Parabens: These synthetic preservatives are often used to extend the shelf life of skincare products but have been linked to hormone disruption,  reproductive issues and have been detected in breast cancer tissue, raising concerns about their potential role in breast cancer development.
  2. Phthalates: Found in fragrances and plastics, phthalates have been associated with endocrine disruption and adverse effects on reproductive health.
  3. Sulfates: Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) are harsh surfactants that can strip the skin of its natural oils and have been linked to allergic reactions, dryness, and exacerbation of skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis. Furthermore, both SLS and SLES have been associated with organ toxicity and environmental contamination, posing risks not only to our bodies but also to aquatic life when washed down the drain.
  4. Formaldehyde: A known carcinogen, formaldehyde and its releasing agents are sometimes used as preservatives in skincare products, posing serious health risks.
  5. Mineral Oils: Derived from petroleum, can clog pores and suffocate the skin, leading to acne and other skin issues.
  6. DEA, TEA, and MEA: Are ethanolamines commonly used as emulsifiers and pH adjusters in cosmetics. While they help products maintain stability and consistency, they come with their own set of concerns. DEA has been classified as a possible human carcinogen, TEA and MEA can react with other chemicals in personal care products to form nitrosamines, which are potent carcinogens.
  7. Petrochemicals: including mineral oils, are derived from crude oil and are non-renewable resources. Their extraction and processing contribute to environmental degradation and carbon emissions, further exacerbating climate change.
  8. Glycols and Silicones: are often used in skincare and haircare products for their smoothing and moisturizing properties. However, glycols such as propylene glycol can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions, while silicones can create a barrier on the skin that traps dirt and bacteria, leading to breakouts and dullness.
  9. Artificial Colours and Fragrances: These are added to many personal care products to enhance their appearance and aroma. However, they can contain a cocktail of synthetic chemicals, including phthalates, which have been linked to reproductive and developmental toxicity.

Always Read the Labels:

When shopping for natural non-toxic skincare products, it's crucial to read the ingredient labels carefully. Look for recognisable, plant-based ingredients listed near the top of the ingredient list. Be wary of products that contain long lists of chemical compounds or ingredients with complicated names you can't pronounce.

If you have allergens or sensitive/reactive skin always do a patch test.
